Why a Web Designer is Like a Hairdresser

This post is coming out a bit late in the day because I had a hair appointment. What I know about my hair is that I either love it or hate it, but I can’t say what will fix it.

One thing I hate is having a hairdresser with no imagination, vision, or suggestions. Needless to say, I’ve been through several stylists since moving to San Diego.

My current hairdresser is great and I love his work. He knows what will look good on me by the shape of my face. He knows how my hair will react to different cuts, he knows the cowlicks and other flips that drive me crazy, and he knows how to work around them.

This is how I know he’s a good hairdresser.

In a way, what makes him good is also what makes a web designer good. Your web designer must have vision, be able to give suggestions and offer solutions to the troubles that ail your website. Like a hairdresser, a good web designer will enhance your image and be around to help you maintain that image.

Times change, and both your hairdresser and web designer need to stay current on the trends and techniques so you don’t look dated and old-fashioned. If your website is out of date, and your web designer can’t seem to make the time for you, you need to think about finding a new designer.

I know it’s awkward and difficult. Once you find a web designer you can work with it’s hard to leave (a lot like a hair stylist). You need to find a new web designer because too much is riding on your website (like the success of your business) to waste another minute putting up with a site that doesn’t work, isn’t up-to-date, and is making you look bad. You wouldn’t stay with a hair stylist that did those things would you?
