Which Social Media Application is Right for You?

social-media-selectionWith so many social media websites out there, which should you be participating in – if any? The answer to this question is a combination of art and science. With a few answers to some simple questions, you’ll gain a better understanding of which applications will work best for you.  In this post, we’ll be looking at Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Myspace.

In truth, each social media application will work for just about any demographic and business model.  But some applications will work better than others, so we’ve rated each accordingly.  After each question below, we’ll rank the 1st and 2nd best platforms that work best for each question. In some cases there’s only one good solution.

What is Your Demographic?

Age 17-24: Myspace, then Facebook

Age 25-44:  All Platforms

Age 45-54: LinkedIn, then Facebook

Age 55-64: LinkedIn, then Facebook or Twitter

Are You B2B or B2C?

B2B: Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are all good, Myspace is not recommended.

B2C: Facebook, Twitter, Myspace are all good, LinkedIn is not recommended.

What are Your Marketing Assets?

Every social media application gives you options for publishing content from your blog or e-newsletter, some do both.

Blog: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn all import your blog, Myspace does not.

E-newsletter: Facebook allows forms to collect subscriptions, the others do not.

What is Your Social Media Goal?

Again, all of these applications will help you to meet your goals to some degree.  We had to narrow them down to the applications that we feel meet these goals most easily and quickly.

  • Sell Products or services: Facebook is the only one we recommend because there are  ecommerce plug-ins available.
  • Build a List of Potentials: Twitter allows you to amass a large audience very quickly and easily, the others are about tied on this particular use.
  • Build Brand Awareness: LinkedIn, then Twitter.
  • Maintain Client Connections: Facebook and Myspace, then LinkedIn
