What’s the Point of Blog Comments?

If you’re like most of my regular readers, you’re shy and quiet, and prefer just to read posts without making comments. Or maybe you simply don’t know why you should comment.

Here are the top four reasons blog comments are important:

1. They Build Community

Blogs are a key piece of social media marketing. Yes, social media is here to stay and there’s no getting around it. If you haven’t jumped on the social wagon yet, commenting on blog posts is a great place to start. You have a forum to be seen and heard. Let your experience show through by adding something useful to the conversation.

2. Get Support, Clarity and Consultation

No doubt you’re run across a blog post that helps to answer a question you’ve had. Do you have additional questions that pertain to the blog post? Go ahead and ask them. Remember, blogs are social. Most blog owners want to encourage questions and comments. You may get your answer from the author, but you might also get a response from another commenter. In any case, you’ve been able to get some advice on your questions and hopefully it has helped others who had the same question.

3. Get More of What you Want

Blog owners love lively interaction, after all that’s what it’s all about. You can be sure that if they are getting great comments on their posts, they will keep writing about the things people find useful.

4. Market Yourself

Consider that when you make a useful contribution to a popular blog post, you are building your credibility and expertise. When you add a useful link, or an insightful, thought-provoking comment, people will naturally be driven to discover more about you. This is the beauty of social media – it’s marketing through the building of relationships.
