What’s the big deal about online video?

If search engine optimization (SEO) is the vehicle for getting your site top ranking in search engines, then video is like SEO’s rocket fuel.

When you search for just about anything nowadays, you’re bound to see some video clips in the search results. The way things are going, that will soon be the rule, not the exception.

Here are some figures to put online video into perspective:
(by: comScore)

  • 78.5 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience viewed online video
  • The average online video viewer watched 309 minutes of video, or more than 5 hours.
  • 98.9 million viewers watched 5.9 billion videos on YouTube.com (59.2 videos per viewer).
  • 48.7 million Viewers watched 367 million videos on MySpace.com (7.6 videos per viewer).
  • The duration of the average online video was 3.2 minutes.

Keep in mind, this is a 2008 survey and doesn’t even take into account the increasing viewership of mobile devices. Every expert agrees that these figures will only increase in 2009.

What that means for your business
If you don’t currently have video in your marketing budget, now is the time to start planning for it.

Studies have shown that video can dramatically increase your conversion rate because it can:

  1. Allow viewers to see demonstrations of your product or service without committing.
  2. Help to establish rapport with a business or “personality”.
  3. Help the customer understand your product or service better.

Video’s ability to generate traffic both virally and organically means that more prospects can be funneled to your website. Once the customer finds their way to you, they’ll be more likely to purchase.
