You’ve decided that it’s time to create a website for your business or organization, and you’ve chosen a web design company to help you. The next step is to meet (in person or on the phone) with the people who will be designing your site. Though each web design firm is different, there is a base of information that will need to be collected before a website can be built. At the initial meeting you can expect:
- To be asked in detail about the purpose, mission, and goals of your business or organization, what you have accomplished, what you hope to accomplish, etc.
- To be asked to describe the features that you would like your new website to include. For example, will you need a shopping cart system for selling products on your site?
- To provide the web design company with existing logos, photos, videos, and other graphics and information that you would like to include on your site.
During this initial meeting, you can also expect to receive additional information from the company about their design process. Typically, you’ll receive a creative brief that will ask you to describe your goals, your target customers, and other details like whether or not you’ll have an email signup, or promotions that need to be changed frequently.
Once the creative brief is complete the designer will begin creating unique layouts showing the proposed positioning of content, calls to action, graphics, etc. on the pages of your website. Once this has been completed, you may speak to the designer or the project manager about changes you want to make and any other details that the layouts have uncovered that need to be addressed.
Now that you have some idea of what to expect during your first meeting with your web design company, take the time to write down some of the questions that you have, and be sure to bring this list with you. Remember, the web designers will create your website based on the information that you provide, so asking the right questions and giving well thought out answers is very important.
