Tumblr Growing In Members, Page Views, And Popularity

Tumblr, the social media site that you may not have heard of yet, is slowly building its reputation and may soon achieve mainstream popularity and usage in the United States.   According to Quantcast, Tumblr, a multimedia micro-blogging site (like Twitter), recently made the list of the top 50 websites in the United States.  And when you consider that the site now receives 1.5 billion page views a day and less then half of its users are in the United States, it is easy to gauge the rapid growth of this site.

What makes Tumblr different?

For starters, unlike Twitter, you’re not limited to 140 characters. It allows users to create a blog with customizable themes and fonts and then post to their blog by logging into the site, via email, and back and forth between other social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. You can also import your current blog posts. It also allows users to seamlessly integrate videos and other multimedia into their blog posts and, like Twitter, provides them with the opportunity to follow other users and to become followers themselves.

Account creation is a little confusing, particularly since Tumblr asks you a series of initial questions and prevents you from accessing your account until you either answer them or close the window. But once you’re in, you’ll really enjoy the interface, as well as all the included functionality to market your company.

Given the speed at which the site is growing, it is probably only a matter of time before many people you know will be happily spending their free time “Tumbling” with their friends.

What demographic is Tumbler going to be most popular with?

    Hi Kate,
According to Quantcast, Tumblr has a really wide spread of age groups but 18-34 is the largest group. Surprisingly the Male/Female ratio is just about equal. (Generally, women dominate social media.) Doesn’t look like businesses are picking it up much, but that could change quickly…consider this an “untapped” market ripe with potential.
