The 3 Most Common Website Design Mistakes

If you’ve ever gone to a website to purchase or get more information, and then found yourself going someplace else instead, then you know the first site just didn’t work for you. (When we say “work” we mean, convert.) It can be hard to pinpoint exactly what it was that made you turn away.

Chances are likely that the site had one or all of these common website design mistakes. On their own, these errors will make you work harder for the sale, but in combination you can be sure the user is going somewhere else instead.

Here are some of the most common website design mistakes:

Lack of Balance:

Graphics, content, branding, and calls to action (CTA) must all be in balance in order for a site to attract and keep the attention of the visitor.  If a site has a lot of flashy graphics but little content or CTAs, or has the opposite problem of no graphics and lots of content unbroken by logos, pictures, or graphics, people won’t be likely to return to the site again.

Not Appearing Authoritative:

Websites (and businesses) gain the confidence and trust of users when they appear to be authoritative and credible. This is done by including testimonials about the products or services being offered on the site,  indicating membership or affiliation with trusted consumer groups, like the Better Business Bureau, and having a secure online checkout system.

Lack Of Defined Goals:

Each page on your website should have a clear purpose and an ultimate goal. Whether this is to educate the site visitor, persuade them to buy a product or service, or allow them to fill out a form to obtain more information, it  is important to keep the purpose of each page in mind. Remember, if you don’t know what the purpose of a page on your site is, your visitors won’t know either.
