Terminology You Should Know Before Choosing a Search Engine Optimization Company

A lot of SEO is shrouded in mystery, and the jargon doesn’t do anything to help clear up the matter. Here’s some terminology you should understand so that you can have a real conversation with your SEO practitioner.

Analytics
A tool that tracks visitor information on a website.

Conversion Analysis
Conversion Analysis will tell you how many leads are turning into prospects. It also covers analyzing data in order to increase your conversion rate.

In, Out, On and Off
Inbound, outbound, on-page and off-page are terms you might hear in the mix of magical ingredients. Inbound refers to links that direct users to your page. Outbound refers to links on your website that direct users to other sites. On-page SEO is stuff that is done to your website like including, revising, or adding content and keywords. Off-page SEO is stuff like getting  links to your site from sources such as blogs, articles, or social networking sites.

Keyword Density
This refers to the number of times your chosen keywords show up in a block of content. You don’t want too many, or too few.

Keywords and Search Terms
These are the words or phrases you want to be found for. As a user, you type in keywords when you are looking for results in Google.

Link Building
Building links so that visitors will find your site substantially increases your traffic and therefore your popularity. Link building involves a variety of practices like placing your URL in directories, social bookmarking sites, and link exchanges.

Meta Tags
These are special tags in the coding of your website pages that give search engines a synopsis of what that page is about. As the robots go through, they will match relevancy of your meta tags with your content.

Social Bookmarking
There are many social bookmarking sites like:  del.icio.us, StumbleUpon.com, and Digg.com.  These sites let users save links, or bookmarks, to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, but can be saved privately. Bookmarks can be viewed chronologically, by category or tags, or via a search engine.
