Does your social class determine which social network you use and vice versa? Most people probably don’t put too much thought into the answer to this question. A recent article on CNN.com, though, may cause more people to think about the reasons behind their social networking choices.
According to the article:
- The more money you make, the more likely you are to choose Facebook over MySpace.
- On LinkedIn, the social network for professionals, a large percentage of users earn $100,000 a year or more.
- Many people who use Facebook also use Twitter.
- After LinkedIn, Twitter has the highest percentage of affluent users.
So what does this mean for social media marketers? Simple: When choosing between social networking sites for your business profile, think about the age and economic demographic that you are trying to attract. Skewing towards younger and/or blue collar workers? MySpace may be the better choice. If, on the other hand, you are trying to reach an older and/or wealthier demographic, Facebook may be the better choice.
