Of course, you’ve heard of Google, but have you heard of Blackle?
Blackle, developed by Sydney, Australia-based Heap Media and powered by Google custom search, is designed to be an energy saving alternative way to browse the Internet.
The idea for Blackle came about as the result of a 2007 blog post that suggested that a “black” or lower-energy version of Google could save up to 750 Megawatt hours a year. While this number has been debated since the publishing of the post, the idea proposed within it—a low energy, black-screened version of the popular search engine, appealed to the developers at Heap Media, and Blackle was born.
Using Blackle is no different from using Google, except that the screen is black, the type-face is white, and a message telling users how many watt hours have been saved to date appears on the screen.
With Earth Day approaching, if you’re looking for a small way to help the environment and save energy, give Blackle a try. Remember, every little bit of energy saved helps.
