Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a practice that is often shrouded in mystery. This is partly because the search engines keep their algorithms secret so that no one has an unfair advantage. But it’s also because there are many unqualified SEO practitioners in the world who use smoke and mirrors to hide their lack of knowledge.
We’re going to remove the veil for you, and tell you how you can improve your website’s search rank with just a few adjustments.
First, two quick tutorials
You’ll want to take a look at these before you read on. They will help you understand what you’re looking for. The links below will open in new windows.
Keywords
We have powerful applications that look for the best keyword options. But since this is the quick and dirty version, simply choose some keywords or search phrases you want to be found for. Then, take those keywords and search for them in your favorite search engine. Choose the first few websites that are ranked for those terms, and view their keywords. This will give you an idea of the kind of keywords you want on your website.
Page Title
Once you’ve decided on your keywords, make sure to include them in the page title. Search engines use the page title extensively to categorize what your page is supposed to be about. Supporting items like headers, meta tags and content are secondary in importance.
Meta Tags
When you view the source of a web page you’ll see Title, Description and Keywords tags. These are the three most common tags and collectively they are known as “Meta Tags”. Be sure you use keywords in these areas.
Headers
H1 Headers are always the largest headers on a page followed by H2 and H3, H4, H5, etc. The higher the header number, the smaller the size. The most important place to add keywords is in the H1 headers. Keywords in the other headers won’t hurt, but their importance goes down with the size.
URL
If you can add keywords into your URL do it. One caveat is that when you change URLs you run the risk of breaking links. You should only have a professional do this change for you.
Links
Lastly, if you have links from page to page within the content of your pages, use some descriptive wording in the link. For instance, when linking to another page you could say “Click here for more.” or you could say “View more about our Search Engine Optimization services.” Because the second one has keywords relating to the actual page it is a much better link.
