With all the players and components involved in keeping a website running, the chances that something will go wrong are pretty good. But armed with information you can avoid the most common issues.
#1 Moving Your Domain Name
Ouch! Ironically, domain names are one of the easiest website pieces to wrangle and manage, yet they cause our clients a ton of unneeded pain and panic. If you’re ever told that you need to move your domain name to a different registrar, all of your warning bells should go off at once. Moving your domain from one registrar to another can wreak untold havoc on your email and ability to access your website.
Advice: Find a reputable domain registrar (like us) and leave it there! If you really need to move it, make sure that you hire someone knowledgeable and experienced to handle the transfer for you.
#2: Bad Record Keeping
There are four things you need in order to have any website: a web host, domain registrar, a web developer and a web designer. If you have an ecommerce or custom-development website this list can double.
Advice: Keep records of who did what to your website. These records should include username and password information in case you have to access accounts online. We’ve created a guide, “Effective Website Management” and it’s yours free to download. Simply fill out all the information and keep it in a safe place. And you can make this even easier: if future-ink builds your website we can do ALL of the items listed above in one place, which really simplifies things for you!
#3: Email Overlfow
If you’ve ever had to ask yourself, “I wonder why I’m not getting any email today?” this is for you. Typically, if you aren’t receiving emails it means your inbox is full on the server. To add insult to injury, once this problem is resolved, you won’t get any of those lost emails back.
Advice: Your email program (Outlook, Safari, etc.) should be set to download all mail from the server. This will ensure that you don’t have this issue. We’ve even created a tutorial to help you manage this setting in Outlook. View this tutorial now.
#4: Exceeding Your Website Bandwidth
There’s nothing worse than public embarrassment. And there’s nothing more embarrassing than sending thousands of potential customers to a site that has stopped working. When you’re doing any kind of PR your website needs to be ready to handle the mobs of people flocking to your site.
Advice: Your website comes with a certain amount of bandwidth that can be easily exceeded if you don’t increase it in advance. Add your web host to your PR checklist and make sure they know about your PR event. Most web hosts can easily increase your bandwidth to account for the new traffic, and make you look like a star. At future-ink, we will temporarily increase your bandwidth free of charge, unlike most hosting providers!
