Improved Satellite Internet Service On The Horizon

Satellite Internet service, usually thought of in terms as a last-resort for people who live in very rural areas with no other options for Internet services, may soon become a viable, and cost-effective option for mainstream Internet users.

Two Internet satellite companies, WildBlue and HughesNet are developing satellites that they say will be able to deliver faster and cheaper Internet service, possibly as fast as fiber connections.   This means that in a few years, rural Internet customers may be able to pay less for service and receive faster connection speeds, and customers in other areas may have the option of choosing satellite Internet over cable and DSL Internet service.

Of course, there are some drawbacks to satellite Internet, including slight connection delays as signals travel to space and back. The question of how this service will benefit customers who are unable to properly position their satellite dishes, and how snow and other weather conditions will affect service have yet to be answered.

As this new technology becomes a reality, it will mean online merchants will be able to tap into a whole new rural market. It also means that a fast loading site with a clear message will be critical to the success of any company looking to make inroads with the rural customer.

Yeah, the spaceway satellite (going up later this year) will enable 16mbps download speeds for HughesNet customers.
