Where Would Amazon Be Without Testing?
I ran across a perfect example that clearly illustrates the point of this post. Here is Amazon.com’s website in 1995:
This wasn’t a bad site for 1995, but would you buy from that site if you came across it today? If Amazon.com was like most website owners, their website would launch and only be changed when a phone number or address needed updating. But while you’re out conducting “more important” business, your website is busy interacting with your potential customers too. It maybe be convincing them to take action or it might be pushing them to your competitors. You won’t know until you test it!
Amazon.com’s site of today didn’t come about by luck, they spend time researching, testing – figuring out what is and is not working on their site, and making it better so that it converts more sales. And their ongoing commitment to improving their site is what helps them stay on the top, instead of sliding slowing down into anonymity.
There is hope in testing, and there is an end product that has yet to reveal itself. Then once you have that perfect, beautiful, conversion-making, traffic-drawing, search engine optimized website—you test a little bit more. The world keeps changing, your market keeps changing, and the internet definitely keeps changing – and if your site doesn’t keep up it will be left behind by sites that do.
