Graphic Designers Vs. Web Designers

Are you confused about the differences between these two types of design professionals? If so, you’re not alone. The two terms are sometimes interchangeable, but actually describe two similar but distinct skill sets.   Here are some quick and easy ways to tell them apart:

  • While graphic designers have existed since the introduction of printmaking, web designers came into existence very recently in history, coinciding with the Internet.
  • Both types of designers are similar in that they use text, typography, and images to create a design that contains calls to action, informs and educates its intended audience, and forms a visual image in the mind of the viewer.
  • Web designers work with a very specific medium, websites. Graphic designers, however, work on many different types of projects, such as letterheads, business, cards, posters, billboards, etc.
  • All professional web designers are graphic designers, but not all graphic designers are professional web designers

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more graphic designers are making the transition to professional web design. With so many web designers out there, it is important to make sure that you hire someone with experience and expertise. There is an enormous amount of technical knowledge required to create a website that anyone with less than three years under their belts is going to be missing critical experience–and you just might be paying them to learn. Make sure that you ask any web designer or web design company for quality references before agreeing to work with them.
