You remember Pac-Man right? For a refresher, go to Google.com and click “Insert Coin” to play the game for free for the next 48 hours.
This is Google’s very first interactive “Google Doodle” to commemorate the occasion.
According to Marcin Wichary, senior user experience designer at Google and co-creator of the Pac-Man doodle, “Google doodler Ryan Germick and I made sure to include Pac-Man’s original game logic, graphics and sounds, bring back ghosts’ individual personalities, and even recreate original bugs from this 1980′s masterpiece.”
Why is This Exciting?
Ah, good question. Besides bringing back the most successful video arcade game–ever, the whole game is built without Flash. Once again, Flash is getting snubbed, but from a programming perspective this means that websites will soon be able to unfurl their full array of possibilities without having to rely on plugins.
For developers, of course, this means not having to continue to purchase expensive software. In the end we all win.
Time to Play?
The Pac-Man homepage on Google.com is only going to be around for the next 48 hours! I have to go beat my high score now. What are you still doing here?
