future-ink Attends the White House Job Summit

Christianna ConnellThe 130 attendees of the White House Job Summit included big names like Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Disney chief Bob Iger and our very own company President, Christianna Connell.

future-ink is no mega-corporation, however we represent small business, a driving force behind America’s economy. In fact, American small business is the world’s second largest economy, trailing only the United States as a whole.

“The sector I represented was that of small business,” said Connell. “In an economy where roughly half of the private Gross Domestic Product and about two-thirds of new jobs are created by small business, we have a lot to say about how the economy, taxes, export/import, and healthcare will affect our success and overall ability to hire future employees.”

With unemployment at a whopping 10.2%, how to get businesses to start hiring again was the reason for the job summit. This urgency was underscored by the throngs of demonstrators at the entrance to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Their chants, “Out of job! Out of luck! What we need is a buck!” created the backdrop for one of their speakers pleading with the attendees to make the right decisions to get things back on track.

One idea submitted was a stimulus to be given out to struggling businesses to get them back on their feet. “I’m in agreement with those calling for a jobs creation tax credit. I like the idea because it doesn’t just address businesses that are floundering, but also businesses that are doing well.” said Connell. “Additionally, the President specifically acknowledged that the constantly increasing cost of health insurance premiums was something he would work to address.”

The Job Summit was filled with powerful ideas and The White House is working hard to put the right policies in place to create more jobs. However, it’s clear that there is no panacea to solve our economic woes. That means small businesses still need to do what they can to stand out from the crowd. By innovating, improving, and separating themselves from their competition, it is possible to succeed and even flourish in this economy.
