When you think about all of the effort and hard work that has gone
into the design, content creation, and implementation of your website,
the idea that no one will be able to find your website is a scary one.
Having a great looking, well functioning website does you no good,
however, if your customers and clients can’t find you in the search
engines.
Unless you change your ways, here are five reasons why your website will never be found:
- You haven’t submitted your site. You’d be surprised to learn just
how many website owners don’t take the time to manually submit their
sites to Google and the other major search engines. This is easy to do,
free, and takes only a few minutes. - You haven’t used any paid listings. Yes, submitting to search
engines is free, but sometimes a website, particularly a new website,
can use a little shot in the arm, so to speak, when it comes to
visibility. For a fee, the major search engines will list you
immediately and prominently, a must if your website is also a
storefront. - You don’t have enough relevant content. Without content, there is nothing for search engines to index.
- Your site has duplicate content. Relevant, original content is
good, but duplicate content is very, very bad and Google and the other
search engines will penalize your site for it. How do you know if you
have duplicate content on your site? Go to CopyScape www.copyscape.com and enter in your URL. - Your site has code that is not SEO (search engine optimization)
friendly. This can include JavaScript, flash, frames, dynamic pages and
URL’s.
Now that you know what keeps a website from being found, it is up to
you to make sure that your website is easily accessible to both search
engines and potential clients.
