According to a recent VideoCensus survey by Nielsen, Facebook, the popular social marketing site, ranks just behind YouTube and Hulu in popularity, based on the number of video streams and unique viewers per month.
Sites like YouTube, Hulu, Fancast, and others are known almost exclusively as places to watch movies and television episodes. But it is obvious that they haven’t completely cornered this market, given that Facebook more than 217 million video streams in the month of October alone.
Of course, sites like Facebook do have a slight advantage. This number of video streams includes both personal videos uploaded by members as well as television shows and movies, but even so, the fact that Facebook has been able to secure premiere episodes of new shows like Community and others means that the site may soon be seen as a direct competitor of some of the largest video-sharing sites in the world.
Meanwhile, video sharing sites continue to evolve to incorporate greater numbers of viral videos and user-created videos, as well as network-owned content. This evolution makes it unlikely that Facebook will be able to steal the top spots from YouTube and Hulu in the near future. This race will be interesting to keep an eye on in the coming months.
