Blog Writing for Better Search Engine Optimization

One of the best reasons to have a blog is to create some tantalizing search engine food and help your website get ranked better. We’ll focus on some key factors to keep in mind when you’re writing blog posts, so that your posts will have the right Search Engine Optimization mojo.

Title

Your title is vitally important, both to readers and search engines, and it must appeal to both. Your headline must contain keywords to grab the attention of search engines, but it should also summarize the content of the post enough so that readers will know what they are about to read.

Meta Description

Meta content is populated with the “All In One SEO Pack” which is a plugin we add to all our blog development projects.

The meta area determines how the information about your post will appear on the search engine results page. There is still some debate as to whether meta-keywords have a positive affect on search engine rankings or not. However, it doesn’t hurt, and it does matter to the people who are searching. Your description should at least contain the search words or phrases they just entered, so they’ll be more likely to read further. Limit your description to 160 characters so the full description shows up in the search engines.

Content

Good content goes without saying. But when you’re trying to rank for specific keywords, your job becomes much easier when you tightly focus your topic. Watch that you don’t meander too far off the key point of your post. If you can’t help yourself because the information really needs discussing, consider writing another post that goes into that information more deeply. You can link the two posts later. It’s also generally accepted that longer content has an easier time getting ranked. Shoot for a length of about 300 words.

Keyword Frequency

Keyword frequency is the number of times your targeted keywords show up in your post. Over-stuffing keywords will result in getting you penalized, and under-utilizing keywords will weaken your chance of a good ranking. For the average blog owner/author, measuring and testing for keyword density is going to be the last thing you want to do. We recommend that you write so that your blog post is readable to humans. If you do that, your chances of over-stuffing your blog with keywords won’t be likely. Likewise, you will naturally refer to your keywords a fair number of times, especially if you’re keeping to the topic.

Links

Linking is a critical part to search engine optimization. Search engine’s like to see that you have resources and the means to connect to deeper content that will be relevant to the reader. Here are some good practices to apply to all your posts:

  • Link to relevant copy found on interior pages of your website
  • Link with relevant anchor text (meaning, don’t just say “read more” say, “We have professional search engine optimization services.”)
