A content management system, CMS for short, is a software program that lets you add, revise, or remove content—text, images, links, documents–on your website without having to know HTML or other web programming languages.
Before CMS, you had to pay your web designer to make every change. With CMS, you can make instantaneous changes as often as you need. This ability directly affects your online success in four critical ways:
- Control website costs. With CMS, you no longer have to worry about running up a pay-per-change tab on your site.
- Be more competitive. Timing is everything. Stay on the leading edge of your industry by being the first to show new products, services, promotions and specials.
- Keep website fresh and exciting for visitors. Your business is dynamic, and your website should reflect it. Returning visitors will be rewarded with new information, so they’ll be more likely to buy more stuff… and more often!
- Keep content fresh and dynamic for search engines. Search engines are voracious. They reward sites that change their content frequently. The more you change, the more often search engines will visit your site and rank it higher.
Six Key Features of the Best Content Management Systems
Web designers offer various content management systems; however, they can vary wildly. It’s important that you understand what the very best CMS programs have in common:
- Easy to use. The interface between your site and CMS is so simple you can start editing in about 10 minutes.
- Fearless Editing. Your site’s code is protected from accidents. Even newcomers are able to edit your website confidently.
- Low Cost. Make unlimited edits for about a dollar a day.
- Complete Control. Edit all aspects of your site via CMS–links, images, documents and text.
- Retrofit. Easily install CMS on your existing site.
- PHP and MySQL. PHP and MySQL capabilities make it easy to install on most shared servers.

Are CMS’s new? This is the first I’ve heard about them. I wish I had known about this when my site was designed. Can CMS be added to a site after the fact?

DDando,
Adding a CMS after you already have a website depends a lot on the CMS. Our CMS does let us add it to existing sites but many, don’t. If you’re interested, take a look at our CMS we have a demo available too.
